Laptop batteries can be of 3 types - Nickel Cadmium (NiCd), Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) and Lithium Ion (LiON). They vary in price, weight and specifications. All highly advanced laptops have light LiON or lithium polymer batteries that are commonly pre-installed in laptops. These batteries are powerful enough to run laptops and accessories, such as MP3 players, DVD players and USB devices. They are not that heavyweight as NiCd and NiMH laptop batteries and have not got any memory effect. If exploited properly, LiON batteries normally function for approximately 3 years, but it is essential to point out that the three-year period of time starts as soon as batteries are actually manufactured and not when you start to use them. A battery should be replaced or re-charged when the PC cannot run any longer unless connected to the main supply of electricity through an adaptor. Below are several guidelines to prolong battery's longevity. • Avoid frequent full discharges, as this puts extra strain on a battery. Partial discharges with frequent recharges are better for lithium-ion batteries than a full discharge. Recharging partly charged lithium-ion batteries does not cause harm, because they have no memory. Reduced battery's life in a laptop mainly hinges upon the heat rather than charge - discharge patterns. • It is advisable to fully discharge a laptop battery after thirty charges. Otherwise, the fuel gauge will become considerably less accurate and the laptop can go dead prematurely. • Keep a lithium-ion battery cool. • Remove a pc battery from a laptop when it is run on a fixed power. (Some laptop producers express concern for dust and moisture that pile up inside the battery casing.) • Avoid buying spare lithium-ion batteries for later deployment. Pay special attention to manufacturing dates. Never buy old stock, even if it is sold at clearance prices. • If you have a spare LiON pc battery, use one to the full and keep the other one cool by placing it into the fridge. Do not freeze the laptop battery. For prolonged storage, keep the laptop battery at a 40% charge level. Before using any device, remember to read a manual instruction supplied.
